About communo

Built on research findings, communo is focused on three core functions:

communo/Library

Provides easy access to the most recent and up-to-date manufacturer documentation so that users can have better access to official documentation without having to search through multiple websites.

communo/AI

Uses artificial intelligence to summarise and retrieve information from PDF user guides in a conversational but accurate way, reducing the difficulty in finding specific information often buried in inaccessible guides.

communo/Stories

Allows users to share their own experiences, the challenges they faced and how they overcame those situations, enabling other users to be better informed and avoid reoccurrence in similar situations.

About me

Diagnosed with type-1 diabetes in 2016, I have seen how quickly technology has transformed my own management of diabetes. I have been using an insulin pump since 2018 and, while I have seen the benefits, I have also seen the challenges.

When it came to choosing a topic for my final year Computer Science degree project, I was inspired by my own frustrations to research into insulin pump design and its impact on user safety and usability. Living with type-1 diabetes is a daily challenge that can present many barriers. The tools that we use to manage diabetes should work to break down those barriers, not become one themselves.

The goal of this project is simple: I believe that people living with diabetes, like me, always have the right to make informed decisions about their care.

communo aims to allow all users, of all backgrounds, the best access to the information they need to use their insulin pump effectively.

0%

of adverse events are due to lack of education or user error 4

Technology, particularly insulin pumps, has significantly advanced diabetes management, reducing the burden of self-management tasks. However, despite the benefits, design flaws in medical devices, including insulin pumps, can pose safety risks and lead to adverse events.

Limited user involvement in the design process, complex system design and inconsistent education result in barriers that can make effective pump treatment in-accessible.

The project aims to address these concerns by providing simple access to resources, improving accessibiliy and ease of retrieval of information from those resources and facilitating user sharing of experiences with the ultimate goal of improving the safety and usability of medical devices.
